The Heptagram :: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heptagram
The Heptagram is also a symbol of magical power in other Pagan religions. The {7/3} heptagram is also underlying the weekday heptagram.[1]
The heptagram is also used in Christianity to symbolize the seven days of creation and became a traditional symbol for warding off evil, thus the reason that most sheriff’s badges are first heptagonal shaped.[citation needed]
The heptagram is also the symbol of perfection (or God) in many Christian religions.

The Ishtar Gate (Arabic: بوابة عشتار) was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. It was constructed in about 575 BC by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on the north side of the city.
Dedicated to the Babylonian goddess Ishtar, the gate was constructed using a rare blue stone called lapis lazuli with alternating rows of bas-relief mušḫuššu (drago
The roof and doors of the gate were of cedar, according to the dedication plaque. Through the gate ran the Processional Way, which was lined with walls covered in lions on glazed bricks (about 120 of them).
Statues of the deities were paraded through the gate and down the Processional Way each year during the New Year’s celebration.
Originally the gate, being part of the Walls of Babylon, was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the world until, in the 6th century AD, it was replaced by the Lighthouse of Alexandria.
A reconstruction of the Ishtar Gate and Processional Way was built at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin out of material excavated by Robert Koldewey and finished in the 1930s. It includes the inscription plaque. It stands 47 feet high and 100 feet wide (14 meters by 30 meters). The excavation ran from 1902–1914, and, during that time, 45 feet of the foundation of the gate was uncovered.

Composed of around 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills of about the same size spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometres (20 sq mi), this highly unusual geological formation, called Chocolate Hills, is located in Bohol, Philippines. There are a number of hypotheses regarding theformation of the hills. These include simple limestone weathering, sub-oceanic volcanism, the uplift of the seafloor and a more recent theory which maintains that as an ancient active volcano self-destructed, it spewed huge blocks of stone which were then covered with limestone and later thrust forth from the ocean bed. — with Isaac B. The Wave Rock is a natural rock formation located in western Australia. It derives its name from the fact that it is shaped like a tall breaking ocean wave. The total outcrop covers several hectares; the “wave” part of the rock is about 15 meters high and approximately 110 meters long. One aspect of Wave Rock rarely shown on photographs is the retaining wall about halfway up the rock. This follows the contours and allows rainwater to be collected in a dam. It was constructed in 1951 by the Public Works Department, and such walls are common on many similar rocks in the wheatbelt. — with Robin Bray McFalls, Carlos Herglotz, Silvia Helena Pena, Alicia Iturri, Dhiman Khisa, Anca Mihaela Muntianu,Carmen Rueda Tapia, Youssef Elya, Susan Lynn,Felipe Portal, Lovely Princess Heart, Brie Murphyand Cyndy Knapp Franz.

The White Cliffs of Dover
Chalk Formation
The white color comes from the chalk from which the cliffs are made. More than 100 million years ago, the area that is now the south of England was covered by a warm sea. Microscopic plankton lived in the upper levels of this sea, and when they died their bodies sank to the seabed. Over time it built into a thick layer, and the weight of water pressing d
Large glaciers cut through the rolling chalk hills about 20 million years ago. The land mass of Great Britain was separated from the rest of Europe when the Ice Age ended around 10,000 years ago, it turned Great Britain into an island and left the cliffs exposed to wind, weather and tidal erosion.
Cultural History
The cliffs have been an important icon for the British people, perhaps most notably during World War II when the song «The White Cliffs of Dover» became immensely popular. The song, sung by Vera Lynn, looked forward to a time when the war would be over and people could resume their peacetime lives. Asked by the London «Independent» in 1999 whether she ever got tired of singing it, Vera Lynn answered, «No … It meant so much to everyone. The white cliffs of Dover were the last thing the boys saw as they were leaving (for war). The song meant home to them.»

A large, almost perfectly circular hole approximately one quarter of a mile (0.4 km) across, it’s one of the most astounding dive sites to be found anywhere on earth. Inside this hole, the water is 480 feet (145 m) deep and it is the depth of water which gives the deep blue color that causes such structures throughout the world to be known as “blue holes.” — with Cindy Daugherty,Carlos Herglotz, Blue Belle and 28 others.

The most visited and photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest, the Antelope Canyon is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. It includes two separate, photogenic slot canyon sections, referred to individually as Upper Antelope Canyon –or “The Crack”– and LowerAntelope Canyon –or “The Corkscrew.”
The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tse’ bighanilini, which means “the place where water runs through rocks.” Lower Antelope Canyonis Hasdestwazi, or “spiral rock arches.” Both are located within the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation. — with Cindy Miller Mcelwaney, Shabeeb Babu, Gemma Montull and 34 others.

The Wave is located on the Colorado Plateau, near the Utah and Arizona border. The area is a gallery of gruesomely twisted sandstone, resembling deformed pillars, cones, mushrooms and other odd creations. Deposits of iron claim some of the responsibility for the unique blending of color twisted in the rock, creating a dramatic rainbow of pastel yellows, pinks and reds. The Wave is made of Jurassic-age Navajo Sandstone that is approximately 190 million years old. Scientists who study The Wave say that the old sand dunes turned into hard compacted rock over the ages.

The best of the best Ancients cities of Greece.
On the sacred mountain of ancient Messini , Ithomi, the heart of the ancient city used to beat. At the foot of the mountain , remains of this city may be seen , still surrounded by walls that are considered to be samples of fontification techniques from the fourth centoury BC , when Epaminodas gathered the Messenians , who had been scattered centuries.
The city was fortified with what was then state of the art techniques to withstand the Spartan incursions. The wall descended from the sides of Ithomi mountain and reached from the eastern side to the Lacinic Gate and on the north western side to the Arcadian gate. It was 9.024 metres (47 stadia) long . It also hand turrets , and at short intervais there were two-storey strong towers, with embrasures , some of which have been preserved . Of these walls, concerning which Pausanias writes that they were stronger than the famous walls of Byzantioum of Rhodes, extensive portions have been sides of the Arcadian gate. The walls were built symmetrically , with massive stones which were 2 to 2.5 metres wide and 4.5 metres high , with local limestone. At intervals along the walls there were gates fortiflied with strong towers, which took their names from the direction followed by the roads out of them.Today two gates have been preserved . On the ancient paverments , there are tracks of chariot wheels.
The Arcadian gate is dual , with two entrances which separate a circular yard, where according to Pausanias there were statues of the gods who protected the city. On the inside of the walls , which was square in shape, significant monuments , examples of architecture from the 4thcentury , in quite good condition, have been foud. On the arcaeological site today, we can see the site of the Asclepeio , and surrounded by a dual stoa, the theatre and the bouleuterion which was the meeting place of the Messenian assembly . Also the temple of Artemis of whom there was a statue for worship. Some notable relicsof the stadium have also been preserved of the south west side, and the “Sebasteion” , or Caesareion a building with two hals dedicated to the worship of the Roman emperors.
The distance from Kalamata is 29 km. In area has many rooms for rent, taverns with traditional food and café

Ancient Messini was established in 371 B.C., after the Theban general Epaminondas defeated Sparta at the Battle of Leuctra. This war freed the Messinians from almost 350 years of the rule of Sparta. This Messinian capital was built on the site of an earlier stronghold, and was one of the defensive positions made to keep Sparta safe. After the Grecian rule the Romans took over and then the Goths.

The Arcadian Gates.
The Arcadian Gate stands in this site and guarded the ancient route to Megalopoli.
Most of the ruins are spread out across a small valley that is right under the village of Mavromati. Excavations of these ruins have shown that a theater, asklepion which was a temple of the god of health, a stadium, and gymnasium. There is also a number of Roman ruins. Messini was excavated under the lead of professor Petros Themelos, and excavations are still happening now.

Columns from a temple at Messini.
Messini is recognized by a place that the great traveler Pausanias described.
At Messini we started climbing over the ruins and looking at everything. I saw what I think was some sort of fountain. It was a shallow tub made out of stone, but it wasn’t very big. It was all really nice. It wasn’t as organized as Olympia, but you still got the feeling of oldness. There were just lots of stone ruins all around, and some of it was still halfway out of the ground.
I think my favorite part was the stadium. We walked a little ways down and saw the stadium. It was really amazing. It was shaped like a horseshow with white marble seats all around the edges that went in steps. Earlier on it had been used as a real stadium where discus throwing and racing had happened. Later on it had been used as a roman stadium where gladiators fought and there were animal fights. It was a lot better than the stadium at Sparta. A row of columns surrounded the gymnasium, and half of them are upright and half of them are fallen. Also half of the steps were straight like benches, so they looked like they would have a long time ago, but the other half was still not straight.

Some seats of the stadium.
There is a spring that runs from Mt. Ithomi and goes though the village of Mavromati. It also goes into the sight and it runs though where everyone can see it. People used to bathe in this river because they thought they would be healthy if they did. The stream water was clear and cool and it was really nice to see.

The stream.
We also noticed all the mountains around Messini. I think part of the reason the ancient Greeks built it here was because of the location. Everything was just so peaceful and gorgeous. There were dozens of different kinds of wildflowers, trees, lush grass and it when you were there you felt in touch with nature. I think that’s why the ancient Greeks went there and built temples, because they though all the wonders of nature were there, so if you were in touch with nature, you were in touch with the gods.

(more…)
